A variation is an application to make sizeable changes to your premises licence. This could include (but is not limited to):
- extending the opening hours of the premises
- make major changes to the premises or change the layout of the bar area
- add the sale by retail of alcohol
- authorise the sale of alcohol between 11pm and 7am or
- Increase the number of hours that alcohol may be sold on any day
A variation application cannot be used to vary a licence so as to:
- extend a time limited licence;
- transfer the licence from one holder to another; or
- transfer the licence from one premises to another.
If you wish to make these types of changes to the premises licence, you should make a new premises licence application.
To apply to vary a premises licence, you need to submit the following:
- a completed variation application form from the licence holder
- a detailed plan of the premises (only if changes to layout are being applied for)
- a copy of the current premises licence or a statement as to why it is not included
- the prescribed fee, which is determined by the non domestic rateable value of the premises (see below)

Advertising requirements
The applicant is required to display a public notice on the premises detailing the changes that you are applying for. This notice must be displayed in view of the public on A4 pale blue paper, and must appear from the day after the application is given to the licensing authority for a period of 28 days.
This applicant is also required to publish a notice in a local newspaper that appears no later than the tenth working day of the consultation period. The advertisement must be published in a hard copy newspaper - an "online only" advert will not be accepted.
The above notices must contain the name of the applicant, postal addresses of the premises (or if there is no postal address a description of the premises sufficient to enable the location to be identified), relevant licensing authority and the date by which any representations in relation to the application need to be made to the licensing authority. They should also contain a statement of the relevant licensable activities or relevant qualifying club activities that it is proposed will be carried on at the premises, or in the case of an application to vary a premises licence or a club premises certificate the notices shall briefly describe the proposed variation.
