White Ribbon

About White Ribbon

White Ribbon UK is the leading charity with the aim of preventing violence against women and girls. It is a sad fact that violence against women and girls is an ongoing reality, and White Ribbon aims to stop this, hopefully before it starts. White Ribbon (and our support for it) is about enabling men and boys to change that story – because the reality is that most violence against women is committed by men.

Earlier this year, the Council passed a motion to apply for White Ribbon UK accreditation. As an accredited organisation, we will commit to implementing policies and practices that foster a culture of respect and equality within our workplace and the broader community.

As of the beginning of November 2024, North Herts Council is now White Ribbon accredited. This means we will implement a comprehensive, plan aimed at creating a safe, supportive workplace for all. You can read the plan below.

Becoming an Ambassador or Champion

We are pleased to offer you the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in our community by becoming an ambassador or champion.

  • Ambassadors – anyone who identifies as a male
  • Champions – anyone who does not identify as a male

You can apply to become an ambassador or champion here

The White Ribbon promise is to…

'never, use excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women'.

What does signing up mean or include?

  • Being an ally – this means to be a positive influencer and encourage self-reflection. With consistent reflection and positive behaviour and attitude changes, in the long term we can get to a place where women are truly equal.
  • Becoming a champion or ambassador – This means for men (as ambassadors) to be encouraged to listen to women’s experiences and think about how they can prevent violence against women and girls and stop the responsibility falling upon women to keep themselves safe.
  • Taking the white ribbon promise.
