Medical and Carer Permits are special permits provided by North Herts Council to healthcare workers. Permits are issued free of charge to allow the healthcare worker to carry out their professional duties when visiting clients living within a resident parking zone.
Permits are valid for use only in areas designated for residents permit holders and are not valid for use on yellow lines, any other type of waiting restriction or in off street car parks.
Proof of eligibility
- Carer Permit: the carer applying for the permit will need to provide proof that they are employed by or contracted to an organisation that is contracted to Hertfordshire County Council to provide social health care.
- Medical Permit: the medical professional applying for the permit will need to provide proof that they are employed by or contracted to work, for an organisation affiliated to the NHS.
How to apply
To apply for a Medical or Carer permit, you will need to create an account with a valid email address. Please ensure the practice/organisation address is used, not your home address. Once you have created your account, you will be able to apply, renew, request changes and see the status of your application online.
You will need to apply at least 7 working days before your required start date of the permit. This is to allow time for us to process and post your permits to you. Permits may be applied for up to one calendar month before the required start date.
You will need to provide the following evidence to support your application:
- Carer Permit: confirmation on company headed paper that you are employed by or contracted to an organisation contracted to Hertfordshire County Council to provide social health care.
- Medical Permit: confirmation on company headed paper that you are employed by or contracted to an organisation affiliated to the NHS.
Change of vehicle
There is no charge should you wish to change your vehicle details. You can request this by logging into your account.
Surrendering your permit
If you leave your employment, or are no longer eligible, the permit will cease to be valid and must be returned to North Hertfordshire District Council.
Lost, stolen or damaged permits
If your permit has been lost, stolen or damaged, we may be able to issue a replacement permit. Log into your account to request a cancellation of the lost, stolen or damaged permit, giving a brief explanation of the circumstances. Your request will be reviewed, and we will contact you with further details.
Renew a permit
Email reminders will be sent one month before the medical/carer permit is due to expire. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to apply for a renewal of any permit.
