As part of our zero-tolerance approach to hate crime, we are a third party hate crime reporting centre.
A third party reporting centre is a safe place where victims and witnesses to a hate crime, or incident, can safely and confidently make a report without going directly to the police.
A number of council staff members are trained as hate crime responders and are on hand to assist any member of the public wishing to make a report of hate crime through the council.
Hate crime
A hate crime is any incident which constitutes a criminal offence that is perceived by the victim, or any other person to be prejudice towards:
- disability
- race or ethnicity
- religion or belief
- sexual orientation
- transgender identity
Hate crime victims may experience:
- physical assault
- people swearing or making abusive remarks
- spitting or insulting gestures
- people doing things that frighten, intimidate or cause distress
- bullying at school, college or place of work
- arson
- having property stolen or damaged
- disputes with neighbours
A hate incident can be reported as a non-crime incident. This is any incident, which is not a crime but is perceived by the victim, or any other person as being motivated (wholly or partly) by prejudice.
If you want to report any of the above, or would like further information, please call the Customer Service Centre on 01462 474000 between Monday to Friday, 9am and 5pm.
