The Hitchin gardening group of the University of the Third Age (u3a) has transformed a planter in Waitrose car park in partnership with the council.
North Herts Council’s ground maintenance contractor John O’Conner prepared the bed ahead of the planting on Sunday, 15 May.
Maggie Killingbeck, of Hitchin u3a, said: “The Gardening Group was keen to do something practical to help mark our 40th anniversary so it was great to be able to get our hands stuck into revamping this scruffy bed as part of our celebrations. I would like to express our gratitude to North Herts Council for their role in this accomplishment and to Waitrose and Savin's for their support.
“We’d also like to thank the council for their support with the recent tree giveaway. I am delighted to say that, despite the rain, the whole enterprise went very smoothly. We planted 40 trees, a mix of Rowan, Silver Birch and White Cherry in Willian Arboretum. Happily the trees appear to be flourishing.”
Cllr Steve Jarvis, Executive Member for Environment and Leisure, said: “We were more than happy to help Hitchin u3a with this project and appreciate their efforts.”
Cllr Ian Albert, Chair of North Herts Council's Hitchin Committee, added: "Congratulations to u3a on their 40th anniversary. And thanks so much to them on helping to brighten our wonderful town in this way, it is really appreciated."
