Parking enforcement to resume in North Herts

Date
Council Offices in Letchworth Garden City

PR Date: Friday, 19 June 2020 - 9:30am

Motorists are advised that from Monday 22 June, full enforcement activity in North Herts District Council car parks will resume, meaning car park users will be required to pay in full for their parking sessions. Enforcement activity will also take place in residential permit areas from 1 July for those people that are not displaying a valid permit.

As our town centres begin to reopen and we welcome the return of visitors, prioritising our enforcement activity will help us manage available spaces effectively, encouraging people to park responsibly. We will also be enforcing single yellow lines from Monday. The approach we are taking is in line with guidance from the British Parking Association.

The council will continue to support NHS, health and social care workers, and NHS volunteer responders with free parking, following the introduction of the government scheme allowing these workers to apply for permits to park in council-run car parks nationwide, free of charge when on duty.

During the initial weeks of the coronavirus pandemic, in recognition that many people were not going into work, we took the decision not to prioritise parking enforcement in residential permit areas. As people are now returning to work, we have recently started to introduce warnings in these areas and would advise that residents have until the end of June to contact Parking Services to ensure they have the correct permit.

Cllr Paul Clark, NHDC’s Executive Member for Transport said: “With the return of many people to work and visitors to our high streets, we are now in a position whereby we need to more proactively manage car parking capacity in our town centre car parks and on residential streets, to ensure people are parking considerately and safely. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

“We would also actively encourage car park users to use our new PayByPhone service to encourage contactless and convenient payment.”
