North Herts Council has issued more than 80% of eligible households with their ‘council tax energy rebate’, meaning around 34,000 households have received a £150 payment, totalling £5,113,350.
All households in England, in council tax bands A to D, will be given a one-off payment of £150 to help with the rising costs of energy. All those paying by Direct Debit (DD) in North Herts should have received their rebate – if you pay by DD, have checked your bank account and have not received the rebate, please contact us on 01462 474000.
If you don’t pay your council tax by Direct Debit, please make sure you have applied for the rebate online, by either choosing ‘Pay into my bank account’ or ‘Take it off my council tax account' – Council Tax Energy Rebate 2022.
If your home is in council tax bands E to H, there is a discretionary scheme for the energy rebate for those on a low income – we will be writing to eligible households with further details in the coming weeks.
Cllr Ian Albert, Executive Member for Finance and IT, said: “We were one of the first councils to start processing the rebate for residents, and I’m pleased to say that before the end of May we will have issued the vast majority of payments. We know this is a difficult time for many people, and hope the £150 rebate via council tax will go some way to help. To be clear, this is a direct payment, it is not a loan.”
Cllr Sam North, Deputy Executive Member for Finance and IT, added: “We are working hard at the council with our partners to see how we can help our residents manage the increased cost of living from energy bills and other outgoings. Please do contact us if you need help, and check out our guide to Easing the squeeze with top tips on how to save money in the current climate.”
If you are struggling to pay your council tax, or any council related bills, please contact us as soon as possible so we can discuss your options and see if we can help.
Scam warning: Criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to take advantage of the financial worries people are facing. Do not give your bank account details to anyone cold-calling you, and only follow advice from the council for claiming your council tax energy rebate.
