North Herts Council launches ambitious Council Plan for a fairer, greener future

Date

North Herts Council is excited to announce the launch of its new Council Plan for 2024-2028, outlining a bold vision to create a fairer, greener, and more sustainable future for the district. The plan also focusses on responsible growth, to ensure that we can meet the current and future needs of our community.

With four key priorities—Thriving Communities, Accessible Services, Responsible Growth, and Sustainability—the plan aims to guide the council’s actions over the next four years and deliver real, impactful change for residents.

Highlights of the Council Plan include:

  • Thriving Communities: Reducing health inequalities by working closely with partners like Everyone Active, to deliver physical activity programmes for older adults and less active residents. Continuing our commitment to providing grants to local organisations and investing in projects to strengthen the fabric of the district’s towns and villages and a continued focus on our community safety priorities to foster safer and more inclusive communities.
  • Accessible services: The council will continue modernising its services by enhancing online accessibility, simplifying customer experiences, and investing in facilities like leisure centres and parks. Community hubs will be accessible online, giving residents a platform to engage and share their views. A new waste collection contract is also set to roll out in 2025, improving residents’ opportunities to recycle.
  • Responsible growth: As the Local Plan continues to be implemented, North Herts will see much-needed housing and responsible development that considers the district’s infrastructure and sustainability needs. Strategies to rejuvenate town centres and support local businesses are also central to the plan.
  • Sustainability: The council strives for sustainable service delivery both in terms of budget setting and protecting our environment. Responding to the climate and ecological emergencies, the council is committing to reducing carbon emissions and improving biodiversity through initiatives such as rewilding projects and sustainable development policies.

Cllr Daniel Allen, North Herts Council Leader said, “It is a huge privilege to serve the people of North Herts and we have achieved so much together already. We know that there are challenges ahead but together we can make North Herts a better place for all of us.”

Anthony Roche, North Herts Council’s Managing Director, said: “This plan represents our commitment to ongoing improvement and collaboration with our partners and residents. It’s about building on our successes, adapting to new challenges, and ensuring that the services we provide remain responsive, accessible and forward thinking.”

Residents are encouraged to get involved and share their views through the council’s various engagement platforms, including online consultations, local forums, and the Citizens Panel. Feedback will help shape the future of the district, ensuring that the council’s goals reflect the community's needs.
