North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) Hitchin Committee awarded grants to three community groups in Hitchin at its meeting earlier this month*.
The Ravidassia, a multi-cultural centre based in Hitchin, was awarded a grant of £906 to deliver a cooking educational project. The centre, which is open to all and promotes equality & diversity, offers educational activities including language classes and healthy cooking for children & adults. The centre has teamed up with Cookery Eatery who will be delivering cookery and food education sessions starting in December. Vijal Mehar from the Ravidassia Community Centre said: "On behalf of the Ravidassia Community Centre, we are very pleased and grateful to have received this grant. The funds will go towards a suitable cooker to deliver cooking educational programmes in conjunction with Cookery Eatery. We are already in the planning process and our aim is to teach children and adults from all walks of life to cook for themselves and others."
The Hitchin Senior Citizens Welfare Committee was awarded a grant of £2,434. The group are responsible for administering funding to provide accommodation such as halls and community centres for older people to meet in. They also provide support and friendship to elderly residents in Hitchin and the surrounding villages. The grant will enable them to fund the Westmill Friendship Club, a Lunch Club, and a Strength and Stability Exercise club.
Keech Hospice Care, providers of specialist palliative care to children with life-limiting conditions, was awarded a grant of £1,500 to expand their 24 hour telephone advice line. The children’s 24hr Advice Line is an on-going service that is available for any family or health care professional caring for a child from Herts, Beds and Milton Keynes. Although Keech is a national charity, they supported over 40 children and their relatives from North Hertfordshire in 2017/2018 , the majority of which were from Hitchin and the surrounding area.
Cllr Ian Albert, Chairman of the Hitchin Committee said: "We are pleased to help support these groups so they can continue their excellent work in the community. We wish them the very best for their work in the future."
