At a meeting of Full Council last night (21 November 2019), Councillors approved a new Council Plan for North Hertfordshire.

The newly approved plan sets out North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) objectives for 2020 – 2025 and the steps which will be taken to ensure North Hertfordshire is a district in which everyone who lives, works or visits, is able to flourish.

The objectives and what they mean for the Council are:

  • Be a more welcoming and inclusive council

The Council will operate in line with the principles of a Co-operative Council; one that builds the co-operative values of mutual support, accountability, fairness and responsibility into everything it does. NHDC will engage with residents, community groups and businesses; working collaboratively with local people.

  • Build thriving and resilient communities

The Council will work on improving the partnership and relationship that it has with local citizens and develop ways in which local communities can be encouraged to become more involved in supporting, planning, improving and maintaining local environments.

  • Respond to challenges to the environment

The Council will seek to provide a clean and safe environment, in consultation and partnership with local people. It will engage local people and organisations as we progress towards our target of net zero carbon emissions by 2030, whilst taking action to enable and encourage residents to minimise their own carbon impact.

  • Enable an enterprising and co-operative economy

The Council will aim to become an increasingly innovative and inclusive Council, committed to generating community wealth, by seeking commercial and investment opportunities and proactively engaging with a wider range of small and medium sized, including co-operative businesses, to build a sustainable local economy.

  • Support the delivery of good quality and affordable homes

The Council will enable and support the delivery of good quality and affordable housing in the district, ensuring both new and existing housing is fit for purpose, including a commitment to consultation and ensuring communities have the infrastructure they need.

David Scholes, Chief Executive at NHDC said: "The Council Plan is the cornerstone for how we organise and undertake our business, providing the policy context for our budget setting, shaping the services that we provide and how those services are delivered.

"The Plan is ambitious and at the same time needs to be realistic so that we can deliver what we promise. With the Plan now in place, officers and Councillors will work together to plan and deliver projects and services which benefit all of our communities."
