A new exhibition featuring portraits of people drawn during lockdown by local artist and art teacher Nathalie Titterton, has opened at North Hertfordshire Museum in Hitchin.
Running until 9 January, ‘My Covid Portraits’ is a fascinating collection of 52 pencil drawings. Nathalie’s portrait project came to life during the coronavirus lockdowns of last year and really helped her feel closer to her friends and family near and far when working on each piece.
Nathalie said: “It was a New Year’s resolution to draw a portrait of someone I knew each week for a year, so by the end I’d have 52 portraits of my friends and family.
“I’d never done a portrait in my life, let alone 52. At the time I needed a challenge and didn’t realise how ambitious I was being! Having started in 2019, it was the lockdowns of 2020 that helped me finish, and got me through such a difficult time.
“The project helped me keep focused and sane, and most of all it gave me a connection, during the pandemic, to those closest to me, a way to keep in touch when we weren’t allowed to see each other.”
Councillor Sam Collins, Executive Member for Enterprise, the Arts and Transport, said: “These portraits are truly amazing, Nathalie has created a wonderful portfolio of drawings that mean so much to her. But they are also fascinating for others to look at, the detail of each face, and the beaming smiles, it’s an uplifting exhibition for anyone to visit.”
‘My Covid Portraits’ by Nathalie Titterton is in The Arches, part of the Terrace Gallery, at North Hertfordshire Museum, Brand Street, Hitchin.
