As the flood warning for the River Purwell has now been lifted, residents of Woolgrove Road and Green Lane in Hitchin are advised that North Herts Council will be attending the area to remove sandbags that residents don’t want any longer.
Dates and times for collection
North Herts Council will attend to collect the sandbags on Monday 21 October from 7am.
Please place them on the boundary of your property next to the pavement by midnight on Sunday 20 October.
These collections have been arranged as a one-off and therefore we would urge residents to take advantage of this collection if they would like to dispose of the sandbags on their properties.
Public health advice when handling sandbags
Anyone who wishes to keep sandbags to protect their property can do so, but no other collection opportunities will be available. We are also asking residents to look at our previous public health advice around keeping children and pets away from sandbags in case they are contaminated and the importance of hand hygiene after handling them.
If you wish to dispose of the sandbags at a later date we would advise you to wear protective gloves, double bag them and transport them to your nearest recycling centre.
If you have already engaged with your insurer and have a skip on your property, you can dispose of the sandbags in the skip, please double bag them and wear protective gloves when you handle them.
Whilst Hertfordshire County Council worked with North Herts Council to support residents with sandbags on this occasion due to the emergency nature of the situation, it is expected that homeowners take responsibility to protect their own homes.
