Hitchin BID has been awarded a total of £2,000* following recommendations from North Herts Council’s Hitchin Area Forum on 4 July 2023.
The grant will go towards the cost of replacing the Christmas lights to improve the festive display in 2023 and beyond.
Tom Hardy, Hitchin BID Manager said: “We are pleased that North Herts Council have recognised the importance of our Christmas lights in the town centre. They play an important part in the vibrancy of the area during the festive season and this grant will go a long way to ensure the lights are enjoyed for years to come.”
Cllr Alistair Willoughby, Executive Member for Community & Partnerships, who approved the funding under delegated decision, said: “The BID provides a stunning festive display each year. It is fantastic that we can support them to continue doing this and I look forward to seeing Hitchin lit up again this year!"
Cllr Ian Albert, Area Forum Chair, added: "Christmas is a special time for our towns. This grant will provide a much-improved light display for Hitchin during the 2023 Christmas period and beyond. This, in turn, will support the retail and hospitality sector during what is one of their most important trading periods.”
Local Area Forums have taken over from our Area Committees. They cover five areas of North Herts – Hitchin, Baldock, Letchworth, Southern Rural and Royston – and take place four times a year. The new Forums are designed to be less formal and more welcoming to encourage more community participation. They generally start at 7.30pm with community grant applications and then themed discussions will take place from around 8pm. Each Forum makes recommendations for funding, and then the Executive Member for Community & Partnerships makes a decision under delegated powers.
The next Hitchin area Forum will take place on September 5th at Christchurch, Bedford Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, SG5 1HF – 7:30pm.
