A total of £1,600 was awarded to two community groups by North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) Hitchin Committee on 14 January.
Purwell School Association received £600* to help with the creation of a learning garden in the grounds of Purwell School. The grant will pay for materials to build raised beds where children can learn about gardening, working with classmates to plant, grow and nurture fruit and vegetables. The school intends to encourage community involvement by inviting the wider community to get involved with building the raised beds and garden.
Lions Mixed Martial Arts received £1,000* to purchase martial arts equipment for their class attendees. Gloves, shin guards, body pads, boxing bags and a boxing ring will help attendees get the best out of their classes.
Founded in 2013, the Lions Mixed Martial Arts club provides community based martial arts activities for children and adults in Hitchin. The twice weekly classes take place at the Siri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Hitchin. They are open for all and aim to teach martial arts skills, keep children and adults active and build children’s confidence through mental and physical strength.
Cllr Ian Albert, Chair of NHDC’s Hitchin Committee said: "The Hitchin Committee is very pleased to support these two organisations with their work. They reflect the diversity of community groups in Hitchin and bring the local community together through nurturing passions for gardening and martial arts. We wish them well with this excellent work in the future."
