Pre-purchase the Exclusive Right of Burial for a grave space
If you are considering pre-purchasing a grave space, check the cemetery pages to confirm if pre-purchases are permitted in that particular cemetery and the type of grave space available for pre-purchase.
If pre-purchases are permitted, you will find a pre-purchase form on the page. The cost of pre-purchasing a grave space is the same for all of our cemeteries. Find details of current fees on the fees and charges page. Deeds granting the Exclusive Right of Burial are purchased for a period of 50 years.
We allocate the grave spaces on a 'next available' basis, however, we may consider individual requests for a specific location if feasible.
Re-purchase the Exclusive Right of Burial for a grave space
It is possible to re-purchase a further term to extend the initial period of the Exclusive Right of Burial.
Where the Exclusive Right of Burial has expired on a grave space or the grave owner wishes to extend the current Exclusive Right of Burial period, further years can be purchased, as long as the maximum 50 year period is not exceeded.
Contact the Burials Team for further information.
Memorials
You are not permitted to install a memorial on a grave space without an approved Memorial Permit application, which is applied for by your Stonemason at the time of instruction. A copy of the current application form is attached below.
If you have any queries about memorials or floral tributes, or have a specific wish about the position of a memorial, please contact the Burials team.
We have a Service Level Agreement (SLA) in place that sets out how we communicate and liaise with Stonemasons.
Transfer the Exclusive Right of Burial
A transfer is used to register a new grave owner. The transfer can be completed if the current grave owner wishes to relinquish ownership to another person or persons. Usually it must be completed if the current owner is deceased and the family wish to make any amendments to the grave or the memorial.
Under the Local Authorities' Cemeteries Order (LACO) 1977 the transfer of ownership is a legal requirement and the correct processes must be followed.
To ensure we have the correct information for the transfer, contact the Burials team who will advise you of the correct process and provide the relevant forms.
