Free family events to kick off Letchworth Festival

Residents of North Herts are invited to a weekend of free events centred around fitness and wellbeing to mark the start of this year’s Letchworth Festival.

Kicking off on Saturday 1 June, the weekend will begin with a free family fun day, hosted by North Herts Leisure Centre. Gathering at Leys Square, on Leys Avenue in Letchworth’s town centre at 10am, the morning will act as a community outreach occasion, hosted by members of North Herts Leisure Centres’ membership and fitness teams. Residents of the local community will have the opportunity to take part in fitness challenges, including a standing long jump and 200m row, while finding out more about the variety of memberships available across the leisure centres in North Herts and beyond. Ideal for the whole family, the morning will also feature face painters and the chance to have a photo with Everyone Active’s favourite mascot, The Everyone Active Bee.

At midday, the event will move to North Herts Leisure Centre, managed by Everyone Active in partnership with North Herts Council, where the centre will open its doors for free activities throughout the afternoon. For younger members of the family, at 12.30pm, there will be an exclusive 45-minute gymnastics session for parents and children under five followed by free soft play between 1pm and 3.15pm with face painting available throughout. For adults, there will be the chance to try a variety of existing sessions on offer at the centre, including badminton and squash. A health walk will also take place, as an opportunity for attendees to connect with local, like-minded people.

On Sunday 2 June, the popular Letchworth Lido will be opening its doors to two free sessions. Starting at 9.30am, a Rookie Lifeguard session will cover the basics of water safety, followed by a post-lunch beginners yoga session at 1.30pm. Attendees will also be joined by the author of The Lido Guide, Emma Pushill, who will be there to discuss all things lidos and community pools.

The events mark the beginning of the volunteer-run Letchworth Festival, which returns this year for five weeks of fitness, music and art events for the whole family to enjoy. James Bliss, North Herts contract manager at Everyone Active, said: "We are thrilled to be sponsoring such a fantastic community event, and are proud to offer a weekend of family fun to mark the start of the Letchworth Festival. A huge priority for us in North Herts is to ensure we are offering accessible fitness initiatives for the whole family, and I hope the events this weekend highlights not only what we have on offer currently, but what is to come in the near future.”

Sarah Kingsley, North Herts Council’s Service Director for Place, added: We’re always proud to be part of the Letchworth Festival and are thrilled to be kicking-off the month-long festivities alongside Everyone Active with our free events centred around fitness and wellbeing, perfectly timed for the last two days of half term! If you haven’t visited one of our leisure centres before, these events will provide you with a great example of how North Herts Council continues to support our communities be active for life and if you’re a member already, why not introduce your friends and families to the great leisure facilities available on their doorstep.”
