Which department could I work in?

We offer a range of apprenticeships in various different departments including:

  • Communications
  • Customer services
  • IT
  • Business admin (licensing)
  • Accounts
  • Human resources
  • Democratic services
  • Environmental health
  • Marketing (Hitchin Town Hall)
  • Museum

Where would I be working?

Many employees are office-based, working in the Council Offices in Letchworth town centre. There are also opportunities to work from home.

Would I have to work in an office?

This depends on the department you are working in. Many of our apprentices will work in the Council Offices for most of the time; however some roles may involve some work outside the office e.g. Planning, and Environmental Health.

What would I be doing?

You will be working alongside Council staff and supporting your team. You may also get involved with project or system work and have direct contact with the public in many roles, either face to face, on the telephone, or via email. You will also complete training to support you in your apprenticeship at NHC.

How long is it for?

Apprenticeships with NHC usually last at least 18 months.

How much will I be paid?

Apprentices at NHC are paid a salary of £22,700 per year which is paid monthly.

What are the other benefits?

All apprentices are entitled to the same benefits as other employees, this includes:

  • Generous holiday
  • Sick pay
  • Flexi-time scheme
  • Pension scheme
  • 50% Discount at NHC Leisure Centres
  • Parking permit for council car parks

How do I apply?

All of our apprentice vacancies are advertised on our vacancies page, and applications are via our online recruitment system.

What would the interview be like?

You can expect to be interviewed by two members of staff from the department you are applying to join. This lasts about 35 – 40 minutes and is your chance to tell us your skills, experience and abilities. Some questions ask about things you have done well in the past e.g. working well in a team. There aren’t any trick questions and we’re not trying to catch you out!

Would there be a permanent job for me at the end of my apprenticeship?

Although there is no guarantee of a permanent position at the end of your apprenticeship, there are opportunities to apply for permanent jobs and we find that around half of our apprentices stayed with NHC after completing their apprenticeship.

Quotes from our apprentices

What is your favourite part of your role?

I would say working with people is one of my strengths and my favourite thing about the role. I communicate with all different types of individuals and have to adapt the way I speak with them, depending on their level of understanding. Due to me speaking to different types of people, it keeps me open minded which I think is very important.

Jenni, Health and wellbeing apprentice

What advice would you give to someone thinking about doing an apprenticeship?

Definitely consider it. All I can say is from experience it is the best choice I made for myself. You are earning money, learning, and gaining work experience which is something you can carry into different career paths. The opportunities I have been entitled to since working here have been amazing, such as going to a Conference and networking with people from different authorities.

Callum, Democratic Service Apprentice

What is your favourite thing about being an apprentice?

I find that I learn so much more from doing a job than just sitting in a classroom, and I also get invaluable work experience and a liveable salary from it. I find it much easier to stay motivated as I am actively rewarded for my work, and I like to think it makes a difference. I think doing an apprenticeship is the best thing I have ever done, and it will also help me kickstart my career afterwards.
