Sign up to NHDC's new opt-in garden waste service
Residents in North Hertfordshire are being encouraged to sign up to North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) new chargeable garden waste service, which starts in May.
Residents will shortly receive a letter detailing how to sign up to the new service.
What you need to know:
- The last week of the existing mixed food and garden waste (brown bin) service will be week commencing 7 May 2018.
The new chargeable garden waste service will begin on 14 May for those residents who decide to subscribe to the service
- If you do not wish to pay to have your garden waste collected there is no need to tell us that you wish to opt-out.
If you have not signed up and paid for the service by 5 May, your brown bin will no longer be emptied. However you may choose to sign up at a later date if you wish.
All households will automatically receive a weekly food collection for no additional charge. This will be collected in a new brown kerbside caddy which will be delivered in April (flats will not receive a new caddy). Food waste will no longer be accepted in brown bins.
The standard annual charge for the new garden waste service is £40 a year. To take advantage of a £5 early bird discount, residents should sign up by 31 March 2018.
You may have up to two additional bins, and pay for a maximum of three brown bins per property.
If you choose not to sign up, you can take your garden waste to a Household Waste Recycling Centre or compost it at home.

Councillor Michael Weeks, NHDC’s Executive Member for Waste & Recycling said, "Introducing a charge for the collection of garden waste was not an easy decision, but as we are required to make savings of £4.2 million by 2021/22, we have to consider every possible opportunity to meet this target. However, all residents, regardless of whether they sign up to the garden waste service will soon benefit from weekly food waste collections.
"We’ve made the process of opting in as simple as possible. Just visit our website to sign up. The price is reduced if you register before 31 March, so I would encourage residents to sign up as soon as possible."
