Resident parking permits

Where a permit is needed

There are a number of residents’ parking zones around the district where all on-street parking is controlled. Within these zones there are designated areas for permit holders.

You need a resident parking permit if you wish to park in the designated area of a residents parking zone during controlled hours.

Designated areas are indicated by signs, and in some streets there are also bays marked on the road.

How to use a permit

Residents’ permits must be clearly displayed in the vehicle for which it has been issued during the hours when resident permit parking restrictions apply.

Permits can only be used in the designated areas in the zone shown on the permit.

Permits are not valid for use with any other type of parking restriction.

Please note:

  • Residents living in Baldock Zone A are only eligible for one Resident Permit if they have no off street parking.
  • Residents living in Hitchin Zone K are only eligible for two Resident Permits, one Visitor Permit and Visitor Ticket books.

How to apply

Find out how to apply for a permit here.

Check if your property is eligible

The purpose of a resident parking permit is to allow you to park your vehicle, which is permanently kept at your address, in the street (this may include work vehicles supplied to you by your employer).

Check the list below to see if your property is eligible for a resident parking permit.

For residents in Baldock Zone A, please email parkingpermits@north-herts.gov.uk to check if your property is eligible.

Visitor permits

Residents living within a residents’ parking zone can also apply for a Visitor Permit. These are limited to one per address and are not vehicle specific.

A visitor permit is for the use of visitors to your home and must be clearly displayed in the visitor's vehicle during the hours when resident permit parking restrictions apply. Residents should make provision to purchase permits for visitors and trades people.

Households in Baldock Zone A are not entitled to visitors permits.

Visitor ticket books

Residents living within a residents parking zone can also apply for visitor ticket books. Each book contains 10 tickets for use on one calendar day on one vehicle only.

A visitor ticket is for the use of a visitor to your home and must be clearly displayed in the visitor’s vehicle during the hours when the resident permit parking restrictions apply.

There is no maximum number of books that can be purchased.

The user must mark the ticket with the registration number of the visiting vehicle and the date when used. Visitor tickets should be completed using pen. Tickets completed in pencil may result in a Penalty Charge Notice.

Households in Baldock Zone A are not entitled to visitor ticket books.

Blue Badges and exemptions

A Disabled Persons Permit (Blue Badge) can be used in place of a residents or visitor permit or instead of a visitor ticket in all zones. The blue badge holder needs to ensure that the front of the blue badge showing the expiry date and serial number is clearly displayed at all times.

Undertakers and sign written furniture removal vans are exempt.

Bank holidays

The control on the residents' parking spaces within a Controlled Parking Zone does not apply on Christmas Day, Good Friday, or on Bank Holidays. Therefore it is not required that a permit or visitors ticket to be displayed on these days.

Trades people

Trades people should ask the resident for a visitor permit or a visitor ticket. If they are unable to obtain a visitor permit or visitor ticket from a resident, they may be able to apply for a dispensation to park. Further information on how to apply can be found on the Parking Dispensation Notice page.
