Housing grants

The Council offers grants to assist with improvement work in people’s homes in certain limited situations.

The two types of grants available are Home Repair Assistance Grants and Disabled Facilities Grants.

Home Repair Assistance Grants

Home Repair Assistance Grants are a discretionary form of assistance specifically designed to provide practical help, through a grant for small-scale works.

This grant provides cash limited assistance up to £5000 within any three-year period, for minor works for owner/occupiers and private tenants who meet certain criteria. Please see the leaflet below for more information.

Disabled Facilities Grants

Disabled Facilities Grants are mandatory grants available to residents who need to make changes to their housing accommodation to enable them to continue to live independently.

The grants are available to owner/occupiers and tenants and can be used towards the cost of providing adaptations and/or facilities.

Examples of works that can be covered by a grant are:

  • widening doors or installing ramps to make it easier to get into, out of and around dwellings;
  • installing a stair lift;
  • changing a bathroom to a level access shower;
  • adapting heating controls to make them easier to use.

The grant can include works up to a maximum of £30,000 but are subject to a means test.

These grants are delivered on behalf of the Council by the Hertfordshire Home Improvement Agency. You can get more information about the Home Improvement Agency here:
