Groundwork Hertfordshire, on behalf of North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) is applying to Sport England for a grant to fund a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) at Bancroft Recreation Ground.

The estimated cost of the project is £170k, and whilst some of this funding has been secured, a further £84k is needed to cover the costs of this work. To try and secure this extra funding - Groundwork is preparing a detailed submission to the Sports England Community Asset Fund for them to consider.

To support the application, Groundwork is carrying out a consultation with local residents to find out their views on having a MUGA in their local community and if they feel it would have a positive impact on their health and wellbeing.

MUGA’s benefit from all year round usability. As well as being multi-functional - they can be used for a wide range of sports and are also inclusive as they can be used by people of all ages and abilities.

Groundwork is hosting consultation events at the recreation ground on Tuesday 15 August from 11am - 1pm; Sunday 20 August from 11am - 1pm and Monday 21 August from 4.30pm - 6.30pm. On site, there will be a marquee with questionnaires available for people to complete and members of the team on hand to talk to.

Cllr Jane Gray, NHDC’s Executive Member for Leisure said: "This is a great opportunity for local people in Hitchin to share their views on the future of Bancroft Recreation Ground. If we can put forward a strong case to Sport England, we hope to secure the necessary funds to progress with the MUGA and provide a real focal point for people of all ages to become and stay more active".

Julia Watts, Senior Landscape Architect at Groundwork said: "The views of the local community that use Bancroft Recreation Ground are important in the design and securing funding for the multi-use games area, as we want to provide an area that meets the needs of the community. We want to submit a strong funding bid, so we are urging people to share their opinions."
